Plumbing and Heating energy saving tips!

It’s always a pain when your next monthly bills are due, especially when they’re costing you even more than last time! How has this happened you ask yourself? Now, I can’t eliminate your bills completely but, I can give you several tips on how to reduce them!

Did you know having a bath, uses between 10 and 20 gallons more water than just simply taking a shower? That’s the equivalent of 45 and 90 litres of water, which is the equivalent of 190 and 380 cups of water! So tip number one is simple. Do you really want a Bath? Furthermore, taking a bath is generally more time consuming, so ensure you have enough time to properly relax and enjoy your bath.

The second tip I have to offer will probably be one that you will happily do. It involves your dishwasher. Firstly in order to save water and cut down that horrendous water bill you’re getting every month, DON’T bother rinsing your dishes. You own your dishwasher for a reason, now let it do its job! I’d still suggest scraping any left overs in the bin but don’t go to the extreme and clean your dishes beforehand. Secondly, don’t run the dishwasher when it’s half empty! Fill it up as much as possible. Therefore you won’t be using as much water and even better less money spent on dishwasher tablets! Get in!

During the winter months any heating is gold dust! Keeping the doors shut, stopping any draughts and wearing all your extra layers. By simply reducing your thermostat by 1°C you could save up to £60 a year. If you’re really reluctant to do this because that 1°C would really make a difference then here are a few ways to make up for the loss of heat. Leave the oven door open once you have finished cooking and let your house soak up all the heat. Another tip is to leave your bath water in the bath and drain it once the water temperature has cooled. In addition to this, turning your heating on and off requires the system to produce blasts of heat as quickly as possible. For the system to do this it needs lots of energy, therefore this is contributing to your ‘ever growing’ bills. That’s why leaving your heating on a lower temperature for longer periods of time, you will save money!

Finally, for my last tip, you should monitor what temperature you are washing your clothes at. 90% of your washing machine expenditure is spent on heating the water. That’s a large proportion!Where ever possible you should try and do cooler washes. If you stick to washing your clothes at 30-40°C you could save a significant amount of money and ultimately cut down your bills!

Have fun reducing your bills!
