Project Overview
Plumb London was instructed to convert an existing bathroom into a fully accessible wetroom for elderly occupants, with a focus on safe, level-access showering and long-term usability.
The existing bath configuration restricted access and increased the risk of slips and falls during daily use. The requirement extended beyond a standard bathroom upgrade, requiring a full reconfiguration of layout, services, and finishes to support accessibility and reliability.
The project also had to be delivered within the constraints of a combi boiler system and a limited room layout, requiring careful system selection and design adjustment to ensure consistent performance and safe use in an occupied property.
Scope of Works
- Site survey and system assessment
- Removal of existing bath and preparation works
- Installation of Wedi wetroom tray and integrated drainage system
- Full tanking and waterproofing of wetroom area
- Installation of thermostatic shower system
- Alteration and concealment of pipework within wall structure
- Installation of handrails and accessibility features
- Glass shower screen installation
- Full wall and floor tiling
- Carpentry and associated building works
- Final fit-off and finishing
Key Work Completed
The original specification for a traditional power shower was not compatible with the property’s combi boiler system. Installing an incorrect system would have resulted in inconsistent pressure and unreliable performance. To resolve this, a high-performance thermostatic shower was installed, allowing stable temperature and pressure control within the system’s limitations.
The layout presented a further constraint, with a fixed window position limiting the available width for the wetroom. This required a redesign of the showering area to maintain level-access functionality while ensuring safe movement and practical use of the space.
Existing pipework was surface-mounted and would have restricted both the layout and accessibility of the finished installation. All services were recessed into the wall structure, allowing correct positioning of fixtures and providing a clean, unobstructed environment for mobility use.
The wetroom was constructed using a Wedi tray system integrated into a fully tanked environment. This created a waterproofed substrate designed to handle continuous open shower use, while protecting the surrounding structure from moisture ingress.
If not resolved correctly, the installation would have risked ongoing water penetration, deterioration of surrounding finishes, and increased safety risks for the occupants due to poor layout and inconsistent shower performance.
The completed installation delivers a fully level-access wetroom, with integrated handrails, controlled water delivery, and a layout designed specifically for safe, daily use within an ageing household.
All works were delivered by Plumb London’s in-house team, ensuring control over both the installation sequence and the integration of plumbing, structure, and finishing elements.
Environment / Operational Considerations
All works were carried out within an occupied residential property, requiring controlled access, careful sequencing, and minimal disruption to the occupants.
The requirement for accessibility meant that layout, fixing points, and service positioning had to be considered in advance, rather than adjusted during installation. This was not a standard bathroom refurbishment, but a coordinated conversion where usability and safety were central to every stage.
Additional Works and Building Protection
The integration of a fully tanked wetroom system alongside the Wedi tray was critical in protecting the wider building fabric.
By combining waterproofing, correct drainage falls, and concealed services, the installation prevents water migration beyond the wetroom zone and reduces the risk of future structural or decorative damage.
This approach ensures the bathroom functions as a controlled wet environment rather than a conventional space exposed to repeated water ingress.
“Plumb London handled everything start to finish and delivered exactly what we needed for my parents.”
Programme
Survey: 8th July
Start Date: 24th September
Completion Date: 24th October
Duration: 4 weeks
All works were delivered within the planned timeframe, including layout adjustments and service reconfiguration.
Project Value
Total Investment: £34k (inc. VAT)
This reflects a full wetroom conversion and accessibility upgrade, delivering a long-term solution rather than a basic bathroom replacement.
Conclusion
This project demonstrates Plumb London’s ability to deliver accessibility-focused bathroom conversions that balance system limitations, structural constraints, and long-term usability.
By combining waterproofing systems, controlled plumbing design, and practical layout planning, the result is a durable wetroom solution designed for safe, reliable daily use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you install a power shower in a property with a combi boiler?
No. Combi boilers do not support traditional power showers due to the lack of stored hot water. A thermostatic system is used instead to provide controlled and consistent performance.
What is the benefit of using a Wedi tray in a wetroom installation?
A Wedi tray provides a pre-formed, waterproof base that integrates into a tanked system, ensuring correct drainage and reducing the risk of installation failure or water ingress.
How do you make a bathroom safe for elderly users?
Safe design requires coordinated layout planning, level-access entry, secure fixing points for handrails, and controlled water delivery. Each element must work together to reduce risk and support daily use.
Location
This project was delivered in Cheam, Sutton, with Plumb London regularly carrying out wetroom installations, bathroom refurbishments, and accessibility upgrades across surrounding areas including Belmont, Worcester Park, Carshalton, and Epsom.
Properties in these areas often require adaptation for long-term usability, particularly where ageing occupants or mobility requirements make traditional bathroom layouts unsuitable.
