What are you talking about, I hear you ask. I want to make you aware of this event, as you may not even be aware that you may be at risk!! You get your car serviced and MOT every year, well – NEWS FLASH – you need to get your home gas safety checked every year by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Gas Safety week is an annual event to raise awareness of gas safety. It is co-ordinated by the gas industry including retailers, manufacturers, consumer bodies and the public. Here at Plumblondon – we fully support the initiative.
Did you know that badly fitted and poorly serviced gas cookers, boilers and fires can put you at risk from carbon monoxide poisoning, gas leaks, fires and explosions?
Did you know that every year, thousands of people across the UK are diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning?
Did you know that you can’t see it, taste it or smell it, but it can kill quickly with no warning!
TOP TIPS
ALWAYS use Gas Safe registered engineer to fit, fix, and service gas appliances in your home.
ALWAYS ask to see an engineer’s Gas Safe Register ID card and check the back of the card to unsure they are qualified to carry out the specific type of gas work you need.
ALWAYS have all your gas appliances including boilers, gas cookers and gas fires safety checked every year.
ALWAYS be aware of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning – headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse and loss of consciousness.
ALWAYS check gas appliances for warning signs that they are not working properly – lazy yellow flames instead of crisp blue ones, black marks or stains on or around the appliance and too much condensation in the room.
ALWAYS buy an audible carbon monoxide alarm for your home and locate it near to your gas appliance in accordance with the manufacturers’ guidance.
ALWAYS use gas appliances for their intended purpose e.g. don’t use gas oven to heat room.
ALWAYS ensure there is enough ventilation for your gas appliances to allow them to burn correctly and ensure you are not blocking any air vents that provide air supply to the gas appliance.
YOU can do your bit too. Tell your friends over lunch, chatting over coffee or if you actually have a life after having children and you have a job – tell your work colleagues. Spread the word and you too could save lives!!
